The impact of Fitness to Practice investigations is far reaching but one aspect which is starting to be recognised more is the mental health impact. Andrea Sutcliffe, CEO of the NMC has recognised this aspect and is committed to ensuring a change in culture around this aspect in particular. In October 2019 the NMC launched their Careline as a year pilot to look at how support can be offered. One aspect of this is a free and independant counselling service.

In their annual FtP report the NMC recorded that from April 2018 - 2019 there were 4 nurses /midwives who died by suicide during FtP investigations

Since 2015 there have been 15 nurses /midwives who have died before closure of their FtP cases although cause of death was not recorded by the NMC until the above figures.

28 doctors died by suicide whilst under FtP investigations by GMC from 2005 - 2013

The Office of National statistics showed that 300 nurses died by suicide between 2011 & 2017
